In terms of period supplies, the offer is increasingly wide. Although reusable products such as menstrual cups, pads or panties are on the rise, for many women nothing will replace a sanitary napkin or tampon. We therefore suggest that you take stock of the different existing disposable periodic protections, to finally understand everything about their respective advantages and their composition.

Sanitary pads

The pad is a periodic protection for external use. It is the menstrual product most used by women in the world, and especially by the youngest. There are several different compositions of sanitary napkins. Some, the ones most often found on the market, are composed of both plastic and chemical elements, allowing total absorption, avoiding odors and leaks. Although agents such as chlorine are now removed from most products, these sanitary napkins are still relatively unhealthy and environmentally friendly. Indeed, the lack of naturalness of the products can have an impact on the balance of the flora. Many of these products also contain endocrine disruptors. Added to this is the fact that they are not recyclable or made from green or recycled plastics.

However, there are alternatives to conventional sanitary napkins. Indeed, more and more manufacturers are developing more ecological and healthier solutions for the body:

Healthy and ecological sanitary napkins

These are pads that are made of green PE or PLA, materials of natural origin. The absorbent microbeads are also made of natural material. In addition, they are chlorine-free, fragrance-free, allergen-free and endocrine-disrupting-free. Thanks to their absorbent core, they offer a very good quality of absorption, while being very comfortable.

100% organic cotton sanitary pads

These pads are entirely made of organic cotton, most of the time GOTS certified. Cotton is naturally absorbent, which makes it interesting to use for menstrual protection. Whether the parts are in contact with the skin or not, everything is made of organic cotton. Although they are disposable pads, these pads are still the most environmentally friendly.

The digital tampons

The tampon is an internal menstrual product, which is inserted into the vagina to capture flow. It is also a widely used protection. The “classic” tampon is inserted with the finger. Again, there are still many tampons made of plastic. This is all the more worrying since this product is positioned inside the body of users. To combat this, 100% organic cotton tampons are hitting the market in droves. Just as absorbent, they are as good for women’s health as they are for the environment.

WARNING: there are many recommendations concerning the wearing of a tampon, which, kept too long for example, can lead to the declaration of toxic-shock-syndrom.

Tampons with applicator

The tampon with applicator is simply a menstrual protection derived from the digital tampon, with the difference that it is inserted using an applicator. The characteristics of the product itself are equivalent. What is also changing here are the compositions of the applicators. For a very long time in plastic (there are still a lot of them), it is now possible to find them in Green PE or in cardboard. The system is exactly the same, but the cardboard ones are completely recyclable.

In recent years, periodic protections have therefore been in full evolution, to respond both to the demand for naturalness from users, but also to environmental requirements. There are therefore several types of periodic protection, whether disposable or reusable.
